Appearance: medium purple-red, marked orange rim. Nose: lovely nose of mellowing fruit with strong secondary characters: black tea, leather, leaves. Complex interaction of fruit and oak with clear development. Palate: nice medium acidity, slightly edgy, big spiky tannins, developing fruit, complex flavours, balanced high alcohol. Impressive length. Conclusion: 1999 was a cool vintage that is not everyone’s cup of tea in Napa (spoken like a true Englishman – apologies). Personally, I very much enjoyed the opportunity to taste an older example of this wine – and managed to steal some of Fongyee’s 1974 Reserve Cabernet at the end of her MW Mondavi dinner! The 2005 will probably be much better in the long term, but this was very good. Drink now to 2012, perhaps longer.
